A SCADA system lets you watch and control your machines from one screen, instead of walking the floor with a clipboard. LabVIEW (short for Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench) is software from NI, and a LabVIEW SCADA system is simply a SCADA system built with it.

Choose a LabVIEW SCADA system if:

your machine or process is a little different, and normal SCADA software does not fit it properly

you want to record fast signals like vibration, motor current or pressure curves, not only slow signals like tank level

you also need automatic testing, with a test report for every product

you want to make changes in your SCADA system yourself next year, without waiting for the vendor

Choose traditional SCADA software if:

you have thousands of tags and many sites

your PLCs are standard, and your operators already know that SCADA software

you only need simple monitoring, alarms and reports

If you see yourself in both lists, that is common. Many plants use both together. We will explain how, later in this blog.

Short on time? Read this quick summary:

LabVIEW is a graphical programming software, and it can run a complete SCADA system.

It works best for custom logic, fast data acquisition, automatic testing and special hardware.

Traditional SCADA software is better for ready-made drivers, big alarm lists and operators who already know it.

LabVIEW is not free for commercial use. The free Community Edition is only for personal, non-commercial use.

LabVIEW mainly works on Windows PC. New versions do not install directly on Mac, so Mac users need a Windows PC or a virtual machine.

SCADA Meaning: What Is a SCADA System and How Does It Work?

Before comparing both tools, let us first understand the SCADA meaning. SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. A SCADA system is a mix of software and hardware that lets you watch and control your plant from one central control station. You may have seen a control room screen showing tank levels, pump status and a red alarm banner. That is a SCADA system at work.

A standard SCADA system is built around four main layers:

Field devices: sensors, transmitters, motors, valves and instruments that touch the actual process.

Controllers: PLCs (programmable logic controllers) and RTUs (remote terminal units) that read the field devices and run control logic.

Communication layer: It’s uses protocols such as Modbus, OPC UA, MQTT, Ethernet/IP and Profibus to send data between controllers and supervisory software. This layer is responsible for communicating data.

Supervisory software and HMI: the SCADA server and the human-machine interface (HMI) screens where operators watch trends, acknowledge alarms, and send setpoints.

How does a SCADA system work?

The SCADA software keeps asking the controllers for data, or the controllers send it on their own. Each value is saved as a tag, for example
Tank1_Level
. The software stores the history in a database, raises an alarm when a value crosses its limit, and shows everything on the screen. When an operator clicks a button, the software sends a value back to the controller, and the controller acts on the machine.

Two questions come up again and again, so let us answer them directly.

Is SCADA a software? Not exactly a software. SCADA is a complete system made of hardware, network and software. When people say “SCADA software”, they mean only the supervisory part, which is what this blog is about.

Can SCADA system work without a PLC? Yes. A PLC controls the machine, while SCADA watches over it and records the data. So SCADA software can read directly from instruments, DAQ (data acquisition) cards, smart sensors or remote devices, using protocols like Modbus or OPC UA. PLCs are common because they are very reliable for control, but they are not compulsory for monitoring and data logging. This is exactly where LabVIEW becomes useful.

What Is LabVIEW Software? Full Form and Simple Explanation

What is LabVIEW software: graphical programming used to build a SCADA system

The LabVIEW full form is Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench. It is a graphical programming software from NI, earlier called National Instruments. You do not type lines of code. You connect blocks with wires on the screen. The LabVIEW programming language is called G.

A LabVIEW program is called a VI (Virtual Instrument). It has two parts as given below:

Front panel: the user screen, where you place buttons, graphs, indicators and charts.

Block diagram: the logic part, where you connect functions with wires that carry the data.

Data moves along the wires, so LabVIEW can do multiple jobs at the same time. Reading sensors, saving data and updating the screen can all run together, and you don’t need to manage threads yourself. For engineers who think in signals rather than code, this saves a lot of time.

What is LabVIEW used for? Test and measurement, data acquisition, automated test equipment (ATE), machine vision, embedded control, research labs, production testing, condition monitoring and, of course, SCADA. That is why a LabVIEW SCADA system is possible.

Why Choose a LabVIEW SCADA System? 6 Real Reasons

Here are the real reasons why teams choose LabVIEW for their SCADA system, along with the limits of each one.

1. Measurement quality is built in

Traditional SCADA software treats data as slow tags that update every second or so. That is fine for tank level. It is not fine for vibration, current waveforms, strain or fast pressure curves.

LabVIEW started in the measurement world. With its data acquisition support, signal processing libraries and NI hardware, you can capture waveforms at thousands of samples per second and still show a clean screen to the operator. If your process has both slow process data and fast measurement data, you do not need two separate systems. The limit: for the fastest measurements you usually need NI hardware, and that adds to the cost.

2. You are not stuck with a driver list

Ready-made SCADA software comes with a list of drivers. If your device is on the list, life is easy. If it is not, you wait for the vendor or pay for a custom driver.

LabVIEW can talk to almost anything: serial (RS-232 and RS-485), TCP and UDP, VISA instruments, Modbus, OPC UA, MQTT, databases and web services. If a device has a port and a manual, an experienced LabVIEW engineer can usually get the data out. The limit: a new driver still takes engineering time.

3. Custom logic, without fighting the software

Most plants have at least one process that does not fit the standard template. It may be a batch with unusual rules, a test that depends on measured results, or a recipe that changes with a sensor reading. In traditional SCADA, you end up writing small scripts inside a fixed environment. In LabVIEW, the whole application is yours. The limit: this freedom needs good design and proper documentation, otherwise the code becomes messy.

4. One platform from test bench to shop floor

The same team can use LabVIEW for R&D test benches, end-of-line production testing and the SCADA screens that watch everything. Operators see one style of interface, and engineers maintain one codebase and one skill set instead of three.

5. LabVIEW Real-Time and FPGA for fast control

When you need exact timing, LabVIEW Real-Time runs your code on dedicated hardware, without a desktop operating system in between. LabVIEW FPGA goes even further, for control in microseconds. Traditional SCADA software does not work in this area.

6. Modern connectivity for Industry 4.0

LabVIEW supports OPC UA, MQTT for IoT messaging, web services and databases. So your SCADA data can go to cloud dashboards, MES systems and analytics tools, without complicated middleware. The limit: security setup is your job, so do it properly from day one.

Not sure if LabVIEW is right for your plant? Send us the list of machines you want to monitor, the controller model on each one, and the approximate number of signals. We will tell you honestly if a LabVIEW SCADA system, normal SCADA software or a mix of both is best for you. If you want to know more please contact us.

When Traditional SCADA system Fails

We have nothing against traditional SCADA software. It runs power grids and water networks very well. But small and mid-size plants in India often face these problems with it.

The cost grows with your plant. Many SCADA software packages charge by tag count, screens or number of users. You start small, add a few machines, and the license bill keeps going up. Some vendors also charge in dollars or euros, so a weak rupee increases your cost every year.

Every small change needs the vendor. A new report format, one extra calculation, one more alarm condition. In some packages it is a ten-minute job. In others it means a support ticket and a week of waiting.

It does not fit one-off machines. Special-purpose machines and test rigs do not match the standard templates. You pay for features you never use, and the one feature you need is missing.

It is slow for fast data. Normal tag-based SCADA is made for slow signals like temperature. For waveforms and fast events, people end up adding a second system just to record them.

It cannot do real test automation. A SCADA system monitors a process. It does not run a 40-step test, check every reading against limits and print a pass or fail report.

Old systems become a risk. Many SCADA system installations are ten years old, running on unsupported Windows with no security updates. SCADA as an idea is not outdated. A neglected, unpatched system is the real problem.

LabVIEW SCADA vs Traditional SCADA: Comparison Table

What is LabVIEW software: graphical programming used to build a SCADA system

Feature

LabVIEW SCADA system

Traditional SCADA software (Ignition, WinCC, iFIX, InTouch, zenon)

Best for

Custom machines, test benches, measurement plus control

Large standard plants, utilities, many sites

Fast measurement data

Strong

Limited

Ready-made drivers

Fewer, but almost anything can be connected

Big driver libraries

Very large alarm lists

Possible, needs more engineering

Mature and built in

Custom logic

Very flexible

Limited by the software

Automatic testing

Strong (with TestStand)

Not its job

Licensing

Development licence plus deployment licences

Often by tag, client or server

Changes after go-live

Done by whoever has the code

Often needs the vendor

So there is no single winner. LabVIEW is better for flexibility and measurement. Traditional SCADA software is better for big, standard plants. Many plants use LabVIEW for testing and data acquisition, a normal SCADA for plant-wide monitoring, and connect both with OPC UA.

SCADA vs PLC vs DCS: what is the difference?

They are not competitors. A PLC controls the machine. A SCADA system watches over many machines and records everything. A DCS (distributed control system) is one design where control and monitoring are built together, mostly in big continuous plants like chemical plants and refineries. LabVIEW can work on the SCADA side, the testing side, or both.

When You Should Not Use LabVIEW

We would rather lose a lead than sell you the wrong thing. So here is when we would send you somewhere else:

You have thousands of tags across many sites and want one standard platform for all.

Your own team already knows another SCADA software and does not want to learn a new one.

You need a vendor-certified solution for a regulated utility, where the template is the whole point.

Nobody in your team, or at a partner you trust, can maintain LabVIEW code after handover. Then a packaged SCADA with local support is safer.

If none of these match your plant, LabVIEW is worth a serious look.

How to Build a SCADA System in LabVIEW: Step by Step

How to Build a SCADA System in LabVIEW: Step by Step

This is how a good LabVIEW SCADA project usually goes.

Make the tag list first. Write down every signal: its range, unit, update speed and source. Most SCADA projects go over budget because this step is skipped.

Choose how to get the data. Use Modbus for most meters, drives and PLCs, OPC UA for a secure link with modern controllers, MQTT for cloud or IoT, and DAQ hardware for fast direct measurements.

Set up tags, alarms and logging. The LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC) Module gives you tag handling, alarm limits and history logging, so you do not build everything from zero.

Design the SCADA HMI screens. Keep the screens calm: a plain background, colour only for abnormal conditions, and clear trends. If everything is bright and moving, the real problem gets hidden.

Test, then deploy. First test with simulated signals, then with real hardware. Build the executable, install it on the operator PCs and train the team.

Take the source code and documents. Whoever builds it, ask for the source code. Software you cannot maintain is just another type of lock-in.

Small systems can be ready in a few weeks. Bigger ones take longer, and we give a timeline only after seeing your tag list.

What to send us for a quick opinion: a list of your machines, controller model on each, approximate signal count, a photo of your present panel or screen, and the reports you wish you had.

Is LabVIEW Free? Community Edition, Price and Licence

These are the questions people ask us first.

Is LabVIEW free? Only partly. NI gives a free LabVIEW Community Edition, but it is only for personal, non-commercial use, like learning or hobby projects. It is not allowed for plant work or client projects. If you build a SCADA system for a business, you need a paid LabVIEW licence. Students should check NI’s present student options, or ask their college if it has a campus licence.

What is the LabVIEW price? NI sells LabVIEW in different editions (Base, Full, Professional), as subscription and as perpetual licence. The price changes with edition, country and time, so we are not printing a number here that may be wrong later. Ask NI or an authorised partner for a quote in rupees. For a SCADA project, also keep budget for the DSC Module and toolkits, I/O hardware, deployment licences and engineering time, which is usually the biggest part. Operator PCs run the finished application with the LabVIEW Runtime Engine, but some modules have their own deployment licence, so confirm this before you fix the budget.

Is there a free trial? NI normally gives an evaluation period. It is the safest way to test LabVIEW on your own signals before you buy.

Is LabVIEW available for PC or Mac? Windows PC is the main platform, and almost everything runs there. New LabVIEW versions do not install directly on a Mac. Mac users can run Windows in a virtual machine like Parallels, use a separate Windows PC, or connect remotely to one. USB data acquisition hardware can be difficult inside a virtual machine, so test it early. Some editions and real-time targets also support Linux. Always check the system requirements of the exact version you want, and download it only from NI’s official website.

Where Is a LabVIEW SCADA System Used?

Manufacturing lines: monitoring machines, counting production, saving quality data.

Automatic test equipment: end-of-line testing with automatic pass or fail records.

Water and wastewater: pump stations, tank levels and flow totals, mostly in small and mid-size systems.

Energy: power quality monitoring, solar plant data logging and substation monitoring.

Labs and R&D: environmental chambers, material testing and long-running experiments.

Pharma and process industries: batch monitoring with traceable records.

Weighing and instrumentation: connecting load cells and weight indicators with a plant dashboard.

Four Mistakes We Help You Avoid

One huge block diagram. It works for a week and becomes impossible to maintain. Use a proper structure.

Too many alarms. An alarm list with 200 useless entries every day is as bad as no alarms. Operators stop reading it.

Leaving SCADA cyber security for later. Use OPC UA security, keep the plant network separate, give each user a role and take regular backups, from the first day.

Using Community Edition for a client project. It is not allowed, and it can create real trouble later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a LabVIEW SCADA system?
It is a SCADA system built with LabVIEW, usually with the DSC Module and protocols like Modbus or OPC UA. It gives you live screens, alarms, trends and data logging.

Can LabVIEW be used as SCADA software?
Yes. LabVIEW can monitor a process, save history, manage alarms and show operator screens. Most plants use both together.

Can LabVIEW talk to my PLC?
Usually yes, through Modbus, OPC UA, Ethernet/IP and other protocols. Tell us your PLC make and model, and we can say how.

Does LabVIEW support Modbus, OPC UA and MQTT?
Yes, all three, through NI toolkits or well-known libraries.

Can I use LabVIEW as an HMI?
Yes. The front panel works as an HMI, and the DSC Module adds alarm displays and trending.

Is LabVIEW free for commercial use?
No. Only the Community Edition is free, and it is for non-commercial use. Business projects need a paid licence.

Is LabVIEW available for Mac?
Not directly in new versions. Mac users normally run Windows in a virtual machine or use a separate Windows PC.

Is SCADA system still useful, or will it become outdated?
SCADA is more useful than ever as plants go digital. What becomes outdated is an old, unpatched system that nobody maintains.

How much does a SCADA system cost in India?
It depends on signal count, hardware, licenses and engineering work. A small custom system and a multi-site system are very different jobs, so ask for a proper quote instead of guessing.

Ready to Talk About Your SCADA System?

If you are comparing options for your next project, share your process details with us. We will tell you honestly if LabVIEW, a normal SCADA software or a mix of both is right for you. No sales pressure, and if LabVIEW is not the answer, we will say so.

Know more about our company from here Click Here

Contact Us: Click Here

Email: business@measureminttech.in

Product names, versions, editions and prices change from time to time.
